Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell thanks kind supporters after having surgery on his broken leg

Paramedics rushed Mitchell from Waverely Park to Epworth hospital in Melbourne, where the surgery took place.

‘The highs and lows can change in a second but I am up for another challenge and be back out there in no time,’ he said.

‘I am overwhelmed by the amount of visitors and kind messages I have received.

‘I am grateful for all the support I have around me. My partner, my family and friends, my team mates, the medical team, the football club and our supporters.’

Several of Mitchell’s Hawthorn teammates visited him on Saturday post-surgery in hospital after witnessing the star player snap both his bones during a tackling drill.

X-rays confirmed clean breaks of both the tibia and fibula bones.

Hawthorn football boss Graham Wright said Mitchell’s injury would be ‘incredibly disappointing for both him and our footy club’.

The 25-year-old will be the first reigning Brownlow Medallist to miss the following season in 42 years.
